1. Buy
local!
Did you know that the
food that you eat travels an average of more than 1,500 miles to reach your
plate?1 By eating food that was manufactured in your country or
even more locally, you are not only helping your nation's economy (and
supporting farmers directly) but you are also reducing how much pollution you
are causing indirectly through consumption. Local consumption can really help
reduce your greenhouse gas emissions and your impact.
2. Drive less!
For many people, a large part of their direct
emissions are created by using their car. One of the most common uses of a
person's car is to get to work. By using public transportation, carpooling,
biking or walking instead of your car you can make enormous reductions in the
amount of emissions you cause everyday.
One point to consider is the use of air conditioning (AC) in your
car. Using your AC puts more pressure on the motor and waste more gas.
3. Use less electricity and more of renewable
energy!
Turning down the air conditioning and heating, switching to
renewable energy sources or turning off lights, TVs and computers are great
ways to use less electricity and fight climate change
4. Spread the
word!
Tell others about climate change, how their everyday actions are
affecting it and how they can help.
5. Buy smart!
If you stop buying
products that contain powerful greenhouse gases (high GWP gases), you can
reduce your impact and you'll be doing something smart for the environment. You
can do this by simply not using or using less air conditioning (in the car, at
home or work), refrigerators (if you have more than one), foam products
(styrofoam cups/containers, foam packaging, foam based home insulation, etc.)
and aerosols (hairspray, shaving cream, etc.)
WHAT IS BEING DONE ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE?
The United States and
other countries are taking steps to limit or reduce greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere. These steps include using energy more efficiently and using more
clean energy. Clean energy is energy that puts less or no greenhouse gases into
the atmosphere. The sun, wind and water are sources of clean energy.
WHAT
CAN YOU DO TO HELP
- You can help by using
less energy and water. For example, turn off lights and TVs when you leave a
room. And turn off the water when brushing your teeth.
- You can help by planting trees, which absorb
carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
- Another way to help is by learning about Earth
and its climate. The more you know about how Earth's climate works, the more
you'll be able to help solve problems related to climate change.
- Government should strengthen the state’s
pollution laws and develop a regulatory cap on carbon emissions.
